Australia a continent in itself, is also officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia and is the world's sixth-largest country by total area after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil. Compared to its land size, it has a relatively small population.

Total area: 7,617,930 km² (2,941,299 sq mi)

Population: 22,876,120 million (2012 estimate)

General

Australia lies in the Southern Hemisphere comprising also the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. To the North, neighboring countries include Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, East Timor. New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east. Australia is apparently the only nation to govern an entire continent and its outlying islands. The mainland is the largest island and the smallest, flattest continent on Earth. The highest point on the mainland, Mount Kosciuszko, is 2,228 metres high.

Australia is a Western democracy and a most urbanized country, as around 70% of its population is residing its 10 largest cities. Most of the population is concentrated along the eastern seaboard and the south-eastern corner of the continent.. Australia is also the driest inhabited continent on earth. Its interior has one of the lowest rainfalls in the world and about three-quarters of the land is arid or semi-arid. Its fertile areas are well-watered, however, and these are used very effectively to help feed not just its own population, but the world at large.

The Australian federation consists of six States and two Territories. Most inland borders follow lines of longitude and latitude. The largest State, Western Australia, is about the same size as Western Europe.

Economy

Australia sustains a developed modern market economy and has had one of the best performing economies of the world in recent years with high-growth, low-inflation and comparably low interest rates. Over the past decade, inflation has typically been 2–3% and the base interest rate 5–6%. The government sector is efficient with a flexible labour market and a very competitive business sector.

With abundant physical resources, Australia has enjoyed a high standard of living since the early nineteenth century. Australia is -by tradition- a major exporter of agricultural products, particularly wool, wheat, minerals such as gold and iron-ore and a producer of core energy-related products in the forms of liquified natural gas and coal. Over the last 25 years, it has been making comparatively large investments in social infrastructure, such as training, education, along with health and transport.

Weather

The climate of Australia is significantly influenced by ocean currents, including the Indian Ocean Dipole and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, which is periodically correlated with infrequent drought, and a seasonal tropical low pressure system that produces cyclones in the northern parts of Australia. These factors induce rainfall to vary markedly from year to year. Much of the northern part of the country has a monsoon (predominantly tropical summer rainfall) climate. The southwest corner Australia has a Mediterranean climate. Much of the southeast (including Tasmania) is temperate.

Tourism

In 2010, Australia, ranked 48th in the world for International visitor arrivals. However, the country ranks 8th globally for international tourism receipts and worldwide has the highest spend per trip from International Visitors.

There were 5.9 million visitor arrivals for calendar year 2011, a decrease of 0.2 relative to the previous year.

If on the other hand you are to be visiting Western Australia, then your starting point should most probably be the Capital, Perth with just over 1.6 Million residents. It is situated in the south-west of the continent which is between the Indian Ocean and a low coastal escarpment, largely known as the Darling Range.

Perth is known world-wide as the “City of Light” and is in the 8th place in The Economist’s 2010 list of the World’s Most Livable Cities. Being one of the most livable cities, Perth also has wonderful tourist attractions such as its 41-hectare Zoo which includes species you’d never come to see so up close and personal, the Caversham Wildlife Park 15km from Perth, the King’s Park and Botanical Garden, the Margaret River Regional Wine Centre and the Nambung National Park. Even spending a few days driving from one place to another, these popular attractions probably won’t be covered in their entirety, in terms of viewing all they have to offer.

The East coast of Australia is the area known as the Coral Coast. This is truly the water sports capital of Australia, with the world famed Ningaloo Reef just offshore, an extremely popular and majestic visiting and dive spot. This particular area is characterised by long stretches of sandy beach, diverse and spectacular Marine life and tranquil crystal blue water waves gently arriving to these unspoilt beaches from the ocean.
